Once upon a time in the '90s in Branchburg, the Branchburg Historic Society prepared for the township’s Sesquicentennial Celebration. Bob Bouwman, Barbara Bye, Greg Gonzalez, and others produced a celebration in White Oak Park that would allow townspeople to come together in celebration. It was a great success, and the desire to make an annual celebration became a bee in the bonnet of Historic Society & Township Committee member, Bob Bouwman.
Bob didn’t want to wait another 100 years, so he created The Branchburg Country Fair as a gift to his beloved town. Without a town center where people meet & gather, Bob was motivated to give the gift of gathering as a community once a year to his fellow residents. The framework was already there from the the Sesquicentennial.
Originally there were community groups, scout groups, High School clubs, local entertainers, dance school students' performances, etc. Barbara Bye approached the communications Commissioner to provide the stage, tents, etc. There were pony rides and a petting zoo…and of course, fireworks!
The newly-formed Country Fair Committee wasn’t looking to make a profit. but simply wanted to provide Branchburg families with the gift of a day once a year, when Branchburg families can all come together to meet, play, perform and join in celebration of our wonderful community.
For a generation, The Branchburg Country Fair has been an exciting time for all: a magical day for families and friends, a place to meet up with old friends. So many good times, friendships and warm memories have been born from this perennial event.
27 years later, Bob Bouwman was still at the helm with his wife Rita by his side, and Maria Desimone on the frontlines coordinating Country Fair Committee members and other volunteers. The tents have grown. Businesses, crafters, food trucks, kiddie rides, firetrucks, the Patriots mascot Sparky and so much more have brought even more excitement. And, yes, we have the best firework display this side of the Hudson River!
Sadly we lost Bob in the beginning of 2025. His loss is felt deeply not only by his beloved wife, Rita, their 2 daughters, Jennie & Michelle as well as 2 adorable grandchildren, Alice and Owen. The whole town lost a wonderful leader, member of the community and Father of the Branchburg Country Fair.
The next time you’re at the Country Fair, have a seat on the bench dedicated to Bob, honoring him for creating & heading the Branchburg Country Fair Committee for all these years. Have a break in the shade, enjoy the Branchburg Community and raise your lemonade to the Fair that Bob built.
